"Biometric identification required."(Computer)
Several companies have begun marketing affordable biometric security systems for home and office PCs. Most utilize voice or face recognition. With these low-cost security solutions, along with the advent of fingerprint sensors that cost below $100, the biometric security market should grow.
Biometrics offer improved security for your computer, since it's virtually impossible to steal your face, fingerprint or voice. And forgetting a password is not relevant with biometrics.

QVoice Incorporated has been receiving high ratings for its biometric security system which is designed with a Star Trek interface:
"All necessary modifications have been completed. Ready for implementation on your command."(Computer)
And if unauthorized individuals try to get into your computer, the program sounds an alarm:
"Warning. We are the Borg. Biometric identification..."(Computer)
With QVoice's system, users can specify voice recognition, facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, or any
combination of the three to secure their computers.

"The face recognition program looks for the points of the face: the distance between your eyes, the...the length of your nose, the height of your forehead, and it compares all those different elements against the user who's trying to gain access to the desktop. And the fingerprint, of course, is based on seven to nine elements, the
different areas that make each fingerprint unique to humans. The voice
characteristics are based on arbitrary speech. And arbitrary speech is created through the characteristics of
what makes a person unique: the length of their tongue, the depth of their
throat."(Norm Hughes, President, QVoice Inc)

And if you are not a Trekkie, QVoice offers another interface for its security system:
"Biometric identification required."(Computer)
Or a user can customize the interface.
"The user can add their own audio to really have the system customized to suit their needs. And we also have another add-on which allows the user to embed their own AVI video clips into the security shields. So when a shield comes on the screen to stop an intruder, not only does it deliver an audio message but it also plays the user's preferred video clip."(Norm Hughes)

Each biometric has its own strengths and weaknesses. By incorporating three biometrics within a system, one biometric compensates for another.
"No biometric is 100 percent proof. That's why multilayer biometrics is very important. There are people in the voice field that
have a thing called a "goat,"which is a voice that could sound
very similar to someone who is authorized. Now how do you prevent that from occurring if you have very, very sensitive data? Well, you combine that with a second biometric."(Norm Hughes)

And with three biometrics, environment will not prevent authentication.
"If you're in a noisy airport or in a noisy factory floor, voice
is not going to be the one you'd want to use because of the acoustical surroundings of the sound. You'd probably want to use a fingerprint. If you're at night
at home and all the lights are out and you're in the dark, then you wouldn't
want to use a face print. You'd maybe use a voice authentication method."(Norm Hughes)
The QVoice's security program is broken down into three main parts.
 |
"The underlying part, the core of the program, of course, is the security that makes it possible to lock
everything that you want to protect on the desktop. That's written in...in
a C, C++ language. The next layer on top of that is the biometric layer. And the biometric
layer is built with specialized biometrical mathematical algorithms. Then on top of that is the interface level which is a very graphical interface design that allows the users to enjoy and use the underlying
biometrics and security."(Norm Hughes)
And in addition to securing the desktop, recognition can also be set up for specific files,
folders, directories and programs.
 |
"If you were to gain access through the safe mode, all the data that
you've encrypted remains encrypted. All the application programs that you have determined
are off-limits remain off-limits. So the intruder may have access to the desktop, but
they don't have access to the files, the data. And you can even tell a
system not to have access to the registry editor, the control panel. So you can lock down everything that's valuable, even though the front door is open."(Norm Hughes)

And a timer acts as a parental control program, restricting the amount of time spent playing games or surfing the Internet.
"So a parent can go to our system and, through a timer, schedule
when that game is available for use and for how long. They may say from 3:00 in the afternoon to 7:00
at night they cannot have access to it. So when they click on the icon,
it requires a biometric to open it."(Norm Hughes)
 |
QVoice's voice, speech and fingerprint authentications run on Windows 95, Windows 98, and the Windows NT platforms. Cost for all
three biometrics, including a fingerprint scanner, will be about $150 or
$160. Users will also need a standard sound card and microphone, as well as a video camera that captures at least five frames per second. The software for voice and facial recognition only can be purchased for about $80.
"People want to have the computer know who they are, recognize them.
That's the computer of the future."(Norm Hughes)
